Coquina Shells at Henderson Beach State Park
You know the expression "Appearances can be deceiving?"
That expression proved true at Henderson Beach State Park on Thursday afternoon.
The water was beautiful and the sand was sugar white but as we walked along the beach the boys commented on the fact that there were no shells to be found.

Little did they know that there were thousands and thousands of shells just waiting to be found.
And I was able to show them just how to find them.
Stand at the edge of the water and wait for a wave to roll in.

As the wave rolls over your feet twist them back and forth

And then watch as hundreds of shells appear.

These are Coquina Clam shells.

Coquinas are beautiful little clams that live just under the sand and as you twist your feet in the waves the shells are brought to the surface.

The really cool thing about these little clams is that as soon as they come to the surface they use a small "foot" to dig themselves right back under the sand again.
So the next time you're at the beach, stand at the water's edge, do the Twist and see what surfaces.
It's a great little trick and the kids will be impressed.
